Waitrose Foundation At Work

Community Building Activities support sport and cultural activities at Morester Farm, Piketberg

October 2022

Due to the remote location of farm worker accommodation in the community, challenges faced by workers and their families often relate to the lack of access to transport for the youth as well as sports facilities.

The negative impact of loadshedding in areas not reached by the farm's generators was also a significant concern and the worker community opted to purchase gas stoves with allocated Waitrose Foundation funds. The stoves are being used for home cooking, especially during loadshedding.

Other projects that funds were used for included the purchasing of rugby kit for the group of men participating in sports. Sport events bring the community together, and are an important part of relaxing and constructive activities over weekends. A total of 71 people directly benefit from these projects at Morester (20 men, 39 women, and 12 youth).  We look forward to checking in again with the team at Morester early in 2023. Thank you to Cornia Smuts for the photos.
