Katco

  • Primary Healthcare Clinic – The Waitrose Foundation Sophumelela Training Centre has developed out of a great need for our Katco seasonal and farm workers to improve their education and social needs.  The clinic emanated from an increasing demand for better health care, education on health care matters and adequate facilities for all our employees.
  •  The Thuthuzela Crèche is growing from strength to strength.
    • The aim of the project is to provide quality pre-primary educ100_6033ation to 82 children of farm workers and contribute to the improvement of education levels of families in the future.
    • Our numbers increased from 34 in 2012 to 82 in 2013 and there is a waiting list
  • Kitchen 
    • The principles of nutrition and healthy lifestyle with nutrition as a primary focus are very important in every family.  Information is given to groups of 8-10 women at a time, on how to purchase, prepare and cook healthy and nutritional, cost effective meals for AIDS/HIV patients and the elderly.

  • This project can also provide a number of employees with the opportunity to produce food products to sell for profit.  Thus giving employees the chance to earn an income for themselves and their families after season.  ‘Green cooking’ where the minimum electricity is used will also be promoted.
  • Katco Training Centres
    • Training Courses – The Katco Training Centre has developed out of a great need for the beneficiaries of our region to improve their daily living, empower themselves and give them hope for the future.  It is an on-going intention to train pack shed and farm workers in the following areas: Life Skills, ABET training in literacy and numeracy up to Grade 7.
    •  Katco is cooperation consisting of 15 farms and 1 pack house. Essential services are made available to those farms who supply Katco pack house with fruit. The following training centres were established on the different farms: Charlgrove, Besterskraal , Saxfold, Cornflats, Waterfall, Umdala , Thorngrove, Glen Stuart and Adelaide Edu-care Centre 

Sun Citrus

  • Day Care – A day care facility for 15 pre-school children of Sun Citrus employees during the packing and picking season (citrus) April – September of each year.  The project started in 2001 and has contributed to the development of children and the peace of mind of parents/workers.
  • Health Care – The clinic service delivered to the staff of Sun Citrus Packers and Sun Orange farm has become an absolute necessity and a service that both the pack house and the farm will not be able to function without due to the enormous value it added to the well-being of the staff. The absenteeism rate went down to 4% (from 8.5%) since the onsite clinic was started in February 2013.
  • Rainwater Tanks Somewhere between the poor service delivery of water and all business adhering strictly to health and safety regulations to puncture all containers, the average resident of informal settlements and RDP housing schemes often are left completely stranded without water.
    Each permanently employed staff members’ house was provided with a 1000 litre rainwater tank with the necessary catchment fittings.
    The workers live in the settlements of Moses Mabida, Mesengeni, Bergsig and Aquapark therefore the availability of rainwater will be in all the community where permanent and seasonal workers live. Repair and maintain the schools rainwater tank and the gutter system, where 350 learners of the above mentioned settlements attend.
  • ABET – Literacy and Numeracy Training for 15 adult learners from the permanent as well as seasonal staff .  Improved literacy and numeracy levels enabled staff members to qualify for enrolment to National Qualification (NQF level 3 and NQF level 4)
  • Permaculture Gardening
    • Training for 400-500 seasonal staff in Permaculture Gardening. Staff was educated to make compost with plant material and food scraps, and preparing vegetable beds with carton, paper and compost at their homes.

      2014 participants could enrol their gardens in a ‘Best vegetable garden’ Prizes for the best 5 gardens included: A wheelbarrow, hose pipe, more seeds and two days certificate course in Permaculture Principles.
      This project was available to 500 seasonal staff members who live in the communities of Aquapark, Bergsig, Moses Mabida and Msengeni. Twenty more 1000 liter rainwater tanks were installed in these areas to ensure that the gardeners have access to enough water for their gardens.

Panzi Citrus

  • Day Care – Ten to fifteen children and two to three caregivers will benefit from the upgrade of the day care facility.  relative and absolute dating
    Toilets will be added to the building ensuring that it is close to the children compared to the current facilities which is an outbuilding approximately 40-50 meters from the classrooms.

 

  • Sport – soccer kits – The pride and motivation levels of 15-20 men will be increased when they receive proper soccer kits.  Their identity as a team will also improve as they will be wearing their own kit.

  • Crèche – The seasonal and permanent workers at Katco and on the farms have indicated a desperate need to find suitable and affordable crèche facilities for their young children.  In fact, a lot of older children are forced to stay at home to take care of they younger siblings.  Safe, healthy and reliable care for their children while they are at work is a mater of create concern.  The aim of the project is to give the children a good start in life by ensuring them good heath, proper nutrition and early learning.
  • Music Education Project – The Waitrose Foundation Sophumelela Training Centre’s goal is to empower the permanent and seasonal workers at Katco and farm workers by improving their ever day quality of life and giving them hope for the future.  The Music Education Project aims to expose the broader community to vocal and choral training and to expose the learners to various musical tasks that will improve their brain functions.
  • Wellness Centre Goal:
    • The Waitrose Foundation Sophumelela Training Centre’s goal is to empower the permanent and seasonal workers at Katco and farm workers by improving their everyday quality of life and giving them hope for the future.
    • In September 2010 a survey was done among the permanent staff which showed that only 2 out of 30 people that responded do exercise regularly.
    • Hypertension, depression and other stress related diseases were also common under the respondents.

     

  • Crèche Equipment  – The building of a crèche has been approved by the Waitrose Foundation Board but we also need to equip the out door play area with the right equipment to meet the specific needs of the preschool child and secure the building and its contents. The necessity of a crèche has developed out of the great need of the seasonal and permanent workers at Katco and on the farms.  Safe, healthy and reliable care for their children while they are at work has always been a problem.  The aim of the project is to give the children a good start in life by ensuring them good health care, proper nutrition and early and early learning.  If they receive proper care, including healthy food and stimulation they will grow up stronger, healthier and better able to deal with school and adulthood.
