It was a day to remember at the grape and citrus producing farm from the Northern Cape. Under surprisingly cold Northern Cape weather, the Orex farm held an official opening of the Zwartbooisberg Soccer field.

Long in anticipation, the farm workers were full of enthusiasm and excitement, ahead of a full programme for the day, and to the fortune of all, the sun made a much needed appearance, along with much calmer winds.

There were around 300 people in attendance, with 30 soccer players from ZBB, 30 soccer players that was invited from neighbouring communities, 24 netball players and a good crowd of supporters.

After the official opening of the soccer field by Jannie Spangenberg, the owner of Zwartbooisberg, entertainment was given by our own drum majorettes. While the soccer teams got ready for their first match, a local boys’ dance group entertained the spectators.

The first soccer match was between Zwartbooisberg and Groenheuwel farm from Augrabies, and ZBB came out on top with victory. Between the soccer matches, there were netball matches across the field, and this provided excitement and entertained everyone.

The next soccer match between a second team from ZBB and another visitors’ team was lost by ZBB. For the final match the two winning teams were playing against each other and the first team of ZBB was the overall winner for the day. (pictured in red in the photos).

The workers committee had organized a raffle for fundraising with a comforter and a case of coke as prizes.

Throughout the day, music was playing and after the excitement, everyone got a well deserved warm lunch with drinks (decided not to braai because of the weather). At about 16:30 everyone was exhausted, and had satisfied their appetites and went home after a very joyful day!

From all the workers a big thanks to the Waitrose Foundation for their contribution in ensuring that the soccer field could be completed and officially opened.
