Worker Committee Training at Schoonbee in Limpopo

April 2021

Waitrose Foundation Manager Education & Training Support, Hilda Links, visited the Limpopo province in April to attend and support the training programme of worker committee members of grower partners Schoonbee Landgoed and Lona. These photos were taken during the worker committee member online registration process.

During the week of Hilda’s visit, two x 2-day worker committee training sessions were completed. In total 36 members attended and was split into two separate sessions due to the facilitator's maximum capacity per group. The first two days had 15 members from Schoonbee Estate and five delegates from the exporter, Lona. Wednesday and Thursday there were 15 committee members in attendance.

In one of the enclosed photos Godwin Kutsirai, Secretary of the Schoonbee Worker Committee, explains the benefit of the farm clinic to workers. He also described the challenges they had before health services were available to workers. The two day committee governance training included focus on responsibilities of farm worker committees, the personal skills and traits essential to committee members, as well as meeting procedures.

It was a productive learning period and a positive experience for the committee members. For some it was also the first opportunity they had to work on computers. Thank you to our team and all service providers who contributed to the success of this week.
