Aftercare Centres add value to Personal and Cultural Development

June 2019

Aftercare facilitators at Kromhout Aftercare Centre (Karsten Farms, Kakamas), Judy Brandt and Joanica Marais, support 31 children with their homework and strive to improve their academic performance. Furthermore they focus on teaching life skills which aim at strengthening relationships and building an awareness of teamwork.

Children attending this aftercare centre are already experiencing diversity in terms of gender, culture and race. During June 2019 an experiential learning workshop was conducted to teach them the key values of respect, acceptance and working in teams consisting of different children from different cultures.

This activity was an extremely valuable learning experience for them.

They reported the following:

  • Working in teams means that everyone must do their part in time;
  • Trusting each other is very important;
  • Being patient with each other is important;
  • Everyone in the team plays a part in accomplishing the task successfully; and
  • To follow the instruction of the team leader is critical, otherwise the task could not be completed.

The abovementioned report from aftercare facilitators also confirms the importance and value of the Foundation’s support services to aftercare facilities such as these.
