To help tackle the literacy crisis in South Africa—where 81% of Grade 4 students can’t read for meaning—two primary schools have launched a library project aimed at improving English literacy and fostering a love for reading.

Each school now has a library assistant who ensures every Grade R–7 student visits the library weekly for storytelling and book exchanges. Six students per grade also receive focused English remedial support. At Manyunyu Primary alone, 661 students are now engaging with books every week—reading, exploring, and unlocking brighter futures through literacy.
