Siyabonga Mathebula is a proud bursary recipient of the Waitrose Foundation, which supported his academic journey from 2010 to 2015. With financial assistance from the Foundation, he began his studies in Plant Production at Lowveld College of Agriculture, later earning a BSc in Crop Science from North-West University.
This six-year period marked a transformative chapter in Siyabonga’s life, ultimately opening the door for further studies at the University of Ireland, Galway. Today, he works as a researcher at the Agricultural Research Council, focusing on tropical and subtropical crops, while pursuing his PhD. Reflecting on his journey, Siyabonga credits the Waitrose Foundation for providing crucial support during difficult times and helping a “farm boy” reach new heights. He extends his heartfelt congratulations to the Foundation on its 20th anniversary, celebrating its legacy of empowering individuals through education and opportunity.
